Stop Boxer Puppy Biting

Even if your Puppy is the cutest thing around, his biting must be stopped right away. Most owners are not aware, that behavior like this will lead to control and Hostility Issues later on, in spite of how endearing it seems, when he looks like he is playing.

Biting in Puppies should be stopped when they are very young. Because they usually have many brothers and sisters in their litter, they quickly learn that when they bite, they get bitten back.

Within 8 weeks, Puppies should know already not to bite. But Mother does not necessarily get 8 weeks to be with the Puppies

The Early Days

A Puppy, that did not learn to stop nipping at your fingers and toes, because it is less than 2 month old, needs to learn quickly that this behavior is unacceptable.

First thing’s first. Never hit your puppy in reaction to the bite. This can develop into Obsession and Aggression if they are afraid of you, because they think you are no longer playing.

To truly stop puppy biting, you need to address the root of the behavior. To do this, you should encourage them in any good behaviors and discourage any negative behaviors. Playing games that encourage hostility might confuse the Puppy. Avoid wrestling, tug of war, or chase games that will lead to nipping by the puppy.

Be very consistent with your training. In order to really stop the puppy from biting, you must be stern in your Training. You know this is the best for the Puppy

The Training

It is a good idea to enroll a Puppy in Obedience Class and teach him to be sociable. There are actual bite inhibition classes where trainers will mimic the behaviors of the puppy’s mother, teaching it that the bites are not socially acceptable. To socialize the puppy is a must! This tells the Dog how to respond to other Dogs during his Walks and keeps him from being aggressive.

Redirecting the Puppy biting by giving him a chew Toy or a bone can be very constructive. After Saying “no!” to the puppy when he nibs your finger and giving him a toy to chew, he will quickly learn, that its not ok to bite a finger, but it is ok to chew the toy.

Another good system is to make a small, hurt noise whenever the puppy nips at you. This simulates what other dogs in the litter would do. This is letting the puppy know this way that he is hurting you. If you surprise the dog, he will let go.

Training to stop puppy biting is a very important part of the relocation process, especially if your puppy is very young. Ideally, your puppy should understand by the time they are 10 weeks old, that biting is not okay. It will make the years to come much less stressful and the risk of potential hostility in the future much lower.

Remember that your dog will only do what it is taught to do. You must be consistent, reassuring and effective at maintaining the commands you give. The second you start waffling or forgetting to reassert your commands, your dog will start to revert to the original behaviors that you worked so hard to train them out of.
